Michal Boyd: PI of the ELDER project

The ELDER research team will be presenting the beginnings of their findings from the End of Life Dementia Experience Research (ELDER) project, a study examining the nature of dying with neuro degenerative diseases in aged residential care facilities across New Zealand.

Featuring: Assoc. Prof Michal Boyd: Comparison of the end of life experience for those with cancer, dementia and chronic illness in residential aged care in New Zealand. Those with advanced frailty require a different palliative care model than those with cancer. This model must be based on comprehensive gerontology care over a longer period of time.

Dr Rosemary Frey: Navigating death: Residential aged care staff coping and strength of religious/spiritual belief will explore the impact of staff religious/spiritual (R/S) beliefs in coping with death in aged residential care, through the use of both quantitative and qualitative data.

Dr Deborah Balmer: Rituals and social practices around death in residential aged care facilities will explore some of the post-death rituals and practices in residential aged care facilities and discuss it in light of social constructions of a good dying experience.

Sue Foster: HCAs: The salt of the earth. Sue will discuss her findings on the changing care philosophy within ARC and how this has impacted on the skill base of HCAs.
